New Look!

Well?

Noticed anything new?

I've finally got down to it and changed my blog's layout. It didn't take as long as I thought it would. Now, I can slowly add everyone's blog link into this page!

Yes, I know it's extremely plain but I can't be bothered to search for nice photos and link it. And so I present this new look. Anyway, I've always believed people READ my blog and not marvel at the nice photos I have. As such is the attraction of my articles, an eye-catching interface is secondary. On the other hand, if you are too free and this plain site bothers you, please contact me. I'm always pleased to have someone volunteer to upgrade my site for me!

It looks like a busy weekend ahead.

The very first item on the menu would be the NDP Preview tomorrow. The second item is rather sad. There will be a military funeral on Sunday. Some poor guy just died in service.

*moment of silence*

There will be no rest day next Monday as the Central Band is busy with the preparation for the Band Convention coming about 2 weeks' time.

I shall update more about the Band Convention really soon.

I'm so gonna be busy!

Language

There was this Chinese guy talking to his Malay female friend on my way back home.

His English was atrocious!

Is this the product of the Singapore education system? Someone who can't even speak proper English? Not Queen's English, but just a properly spoken English sentence?

The moment I got off the bus, I heard some secondary school boys talking. Actually, I wasn't sure if they were talking or cursing. Their conservation was like this:

"you know ah, @^#%^@%^!$!$%@%@%"

"ya man! @$@%@#^#&#$&^#^"

"@#@$%@$@$@ I agree!"

What's with the language these days? It's not properly spoken and constantly decorated with so many "ornaments" that it would put a baroque soloist to shame. Even my army sergeant spoke vulgarities in proper English. Tsk tsk.

Well, I guess my spoken English isn't that good after all. I sorta re-evaluate myself just now. I thought about the normal conversation I make with my friends. As a child, I didn't pay much attention in my early phonics class in Primary School. That's probably one reason why my spoken English isn't so good now.

At least my written English is still presentable. I hope. =P

The day

It seems that the hottest topic around on everyone's blog in the TAB circle now is the Wong-Tan saga. And hence, I shall try my best to avoid this topic today!

My exams are coming in 2 months' time; I'm starting to get stressed up. My minor scales are still quite wobbly. The melodic minors with the sharpen 6ths and 7ths are really confusing me sometimes. Eb.. F.. G.. Ab.. Bb.. Cb.. Eh, wait! C.. D.. Eb.. Well, you get the idea.

On the other hand, I think my tonguing will definitely improve. Try tonguing triplets at crotchet=130+ for like half a page!

I guess the lesson today was generally good. Things to do now:

1. Memorize all my minor scales, harmonic and melodic.
2. Brush up my sight-reading. (It was horrible today!)
3. Try to play more in tune; I'm not still sure of Xva's intonation range.
4. Make better reeds!

I left my reedcase at my tutor's place again. Inside was a reed I wanted to give my student for her exam tomorrow and all my reeds! Tsk, now I have to go make a new reed tomorrow, which reminds me. I need to sharpen my knives. Urgh.

Reflections

After all the big hooha over what's going on Tanglin Alumni Band, I think as a whole the alumni community's bond has grown and become much stronger! Go read Calvin's blog. He's taken quite a satirical view on the on-goings.

Sometimes I really don't understand why they are doing all these. Fine, they have a motive in chasing us away. They don't like us. That's ok. But somehow the method they are using seems to be working against them. Students and younger alumni alike are all starting to dislike them.

But I must be polite and say a big thank you to them.

From their antics, they had actually helped foster a stronger relationship between the alumni. I'm now closely to some of my juniors, some whom I haven't seen before but now know due to TAB. The #tsmb in Mirc is actually much more alive now.

I really wish all these wouldn't have happen at all, who does?

I hope that in the near future, Tanglin alumni young and old, regardless of batch can all sit down together to make music!

Taiwan

I have wanted to write about this topic since last week, but the big hooha over the Tanglin Alumni Band sorta made it slipped my mind. I was just talking to this friend from China so it sorta inspired me to write about it again. Damn stressed can? Chatting with someone from China about such a touchy topic!

So why is DPM Lee's visit to Taiwan sparkling off such a big fuss in China?

The following is strictly my own opinion and it doesn't represent any opinions/thoughts of any organization.

I think the significance of this fuss made is mainly because China recognizes the political power of Singapore. Singapore might be just a little dot on the world atlas but she's definitely one bright flashing red dot which captures the attention of many nations.

China is also very aware of the fact that Singapore is a firm trade partner of the United States. Being a former British colony, Singapore still holds strong relationship with them. Make no mistake, Singapore might be small, but she is powerful enough to make others sit up and notice her. The fuss being made already demonstrates this point strongly.

In other words, China is afraid the private visit of DPM Lee is disguised to help them boost their push for independence. Furthermore, DPM Lee is slated to become the next Prime Minister of Singapore, so it evidently caused a big commotion. But think about it, what does Singapore stand to gain if Taiwan is declared an independent country?

Singapore currently has vast investments in China. Just look at the Suzhou Industrial Park. It's called a Mini-Singapore or something over in China. Millions of dollars had been pumped into investments all over China. Why? Because our dear SM Lee recognize the growing power of China too. She's not called an emerging dragon for nothing, ok?

I'm not very sure about the level of investment in Taiwan, but Singapore and Taiwan has a strong military connection. Thousand of our troops are sent to Taiwan every year to train. So as Reader can see, Singapore is quite stuck in between. Finance stability and defense stability, which is more important?

Both are. It's as simple as that. But if any war strikes out, the best option perhaps to is withdraw all troops currently based in Taiwan. Currently, I think it's hard to analyze which side the world will stand on in the event of a power struggle. Will we see a situation like East Timor? Or will the Yi Guo Liang Zhi (One country, two rules) policy be implemented in Taiwan?

Whatever it is, I'm on nobody's side. Isn't peace better for everyone?

*a la Miss Universe in bimbo voice* World peace!

Gathering

After all the dramas yesterday, we have a mini-gathering today with Ms Chee, the band teacher-in-charge during my time in Tanglin Secondary.

It really feels so good to see Ms Chee after so long. I kinda really miss her, especially after seeing the antics of the present TIC. One thing to mention about her: Her memory is damn good! She remembered things like what class where were from in different years. Don't ever borrow money from her! Haha!

The evening was fun; we shared a lot of laughter and memories about the good old days of school and band. Reminiscing about the days when the band went to Malaysia for a trip, the past performances and anything else worth remembering! The bond is still there even it's been nearly 6 years since we graduated. Time flies!

I haven't enjoyed myself so much for such a long time. Let's have one more really soon!

Tanglin Alumni Band

Before I even start to say anything, read the following extracts:

"...halfway thru diggin out e scores, i happened to overheard wat wong was tokin on e phone.. obviously he's tokin to (Dorean) tan.. heard somethin like him sayin, 'ya.. i agree.. this thing i'll def tell them.. ya i understand tat u don like students not under u.. n i'll tell them nicely later tat we really appreciate their presence but they hav to leave somehow'..."

Zhihui's blog

"...(Wong's words)My conductress and I have come to a conclusion that our Tanglin Alumni Band Membership only opens to those students who were under us before. So I would like to thank these 3 ex-stdents who came for these 2 practices. Our Alumni band is a young band as we just started off, so we might invite you back when it has taken off for some time. At the mean time, we will not inform you about the practices anymore.Young band. Isn't young band supposed to have some experienced players in there?

I'm utterly disappointed. Another way to chase out ex-members. Ex-students. Weren't ALL OF US ex-students? Why only apply to only 3 of them? Why don't they take the effort to know them more and give them a chance at least? I am really left speechless. Really..."

Peirong's blog

"...Shooting us wasn't a problem. really. oh rather, not. HE CHASED PEOPLE AWAY IN A MEAN WAY. darn. "u all fine with it right?" RIGHT. "not angry right?" RIGHT. made an effort to be nice with him. he didn't even BOTHERED.  feel sad for the snrs, really. they all made an effort to come back, be nice to him. he didn't even feel appreciated..."

Pee's blog

"...y muz they chase away the alumnis? They are also part of the band....and they were once a band member,a tanglinian........so wad if they're not under ms tan n mr wong?Realli pissed...Damn them to hell...for goodness sake...i dunno y on earth there's such ppl...They think tat the alumnis like yong xiang, ivan and liang you can't be trusted?Juz bcuz tat they're older guys?..."

Jasmine's blog

"...Flood of different emotions (anfer, sadness, disbelieve, disappointment) flowed through me. Everything juz went blank..all I can focus was on the guy sitting infront toking. To put it simply, my batch of frenz and I were sacked from the alumni band. Did I juz said sacked? Yes we were simply, to put it crudely, sacked. From the alumni band..."

Yongxiang's blog

Yes, you got it. I'm going to blog about the Tanglin Alumni Band again. This time, I'm sparing no one. Alsolutely.

Not to say that I'm extremely pissed off or something. In fact, I've been very calm since last night till now. The only reason why I didn't blog earlier was because I reached home extremely late.

It had been quite expected all along that my batch will be filtered out. I just didn't expect the method to be so direct. I had kinda expected it to be like:

1. They keep criticizing your playing, jumping at any chance to condemn you
2. They will scrutinize your attendance very closely, questioning every single time you miss a practice.
3. They will filter you out by saying: "Oh! Sorry! We have an instrumentation plan to follow! Oh? Why so many from your batch are being rejected? It's just a coincident!"
4. They call you fat and ugly every single practice. Oh no, wait, there only happens in the Central Band. Full of bitches there. Oh well! (Before Reader gets the wrong idea, being called a bitch, ugly or fat is like very common in the Central Band. It's our own friendly way of saying "Hi!")
5. Any other despicable way(s) you can think of.

I was totally at a loss for words when he put it simply: You are not needed (welcomed) here anymore. I could only sit there and smile at other people. I totally didn't know how to question his motives when he puts it just so simply that you are not welcomed anymore. Any suggestions?

A plain slap in the face. I don't know how I can describe it better.

There you go. We, Batch 98, all officially sacked from the Tanglin Alumni Band. This is probably the first time I've across something like this. All alumni bands I know are so eager to welcome back any old boy or girl. Not this one.

Why don't they just call it the "Exclusively Dorean Tan and James Wong Tanglin Alumni Band"?

Fine. To be fair. He did said that we might be welcomed back at a later date. But judging from Zhihui's blog, I hardly think so. It's just so plain that she doesn't like us at all. I don't like to see you here. You are not welcomed! Shoo! Go away!

I find something he said extremely contradicting. He said: "...(we are a) young band. So right now we need to iron out everything and build up something first. So you will be welcomed back in future..."

So tell me, when you are building up a young band, do you need something call experience? Yes? No? I hear a very loud "YES!"

Now tell me again, who are the people with more experience? Did I hear wrongly? US? People from our batch? Hmmm, some people certainly don't think so.

My point is: We are the one with experience! We can help the band! We might not be great players, but at least we try? People like Ivan had lost touch with their instrument for so long and yet, Ivan is still very keen to come back and play.

Ironic, isn't it? A fulltime musician like me from the "Premier band of Singapore" being chased out of the band when I thought they will try to get every help they need. I'm not even charging or asking for anything, for goodness sake! In case they don't know. I get paid to teach ok?

On the bright side, the juniors are definitely on our side. Thank you, Peirong for messaging me. Zhihui, for blogging about what you heard. And somemore whom I don't know but read their blogs. It's really good to know that you people are behind us.

One person I really feel upset and sorry for is Zalina. Seeing her slumped form on the chair last night after hearing the announcement made me felt bad along with her too. After all the arrows being shot at her by Wong, I heard from Ivan that she got a few mean SMSes from Tan as well. Something about bad attitude, so I heard. I said this in Mirc last night. I'm going to say this here again:

"No one else has the same devotion as Zalina!"

We are definitely with you! Despair not!

As this army song goes: "We shall not be moveeeeeeeeed, we shall not be moveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed!"

We will find a way somehow. Some people have better be watching their asses.

Interesting blog

Check out this blog!

I think it's a very interesting and intriguing blog to read, enough for me spend at least half an hour of my time to read all the existing postings and to ignore my friends who were messaging me on MSN. Sorry to those affected by my distraction!

Xiaxue's blog reminds me that humans can be interesting. This girl really does speak her mind frankly without any restrain on herself. She allows her words to flow free and speak whatever so she wishes. It's a kinda "so sue me" attitude. This is what I call character!

May I mention here that all positive comments attributed to Xiaxue were in no way influenced by her photos on her blog. Yes, she appears attractive in the photos but as her disclaimer puts it: "All photos were Photoshop-edited". I'm quite skeptical that she will appear the same way as she looks if I see her on the street. There are a few photos in which she looks totally normal. I guess she took the better looking one. Who would take ugly photos of themselves to show people anyway? I know a small percentage of people do it, but I'm talking about general, normal behaviour!

I'm really quite inspired about blogging now.

Xiaxue's blog is an outstanding example of what a blog should be like, instead of some that I know of which goes like this:

Woke up...
Eat...
Go work...
Shit...
Lunch...
Work...
Dinner...
Go home...
Sleep...

This is not only an example of someone with no life but also of someone who is just plain boring and lazy to even to attempt to make the blog a more meaningful and interesting article to read. Please tell me what you think and not simply describe everything you did today down to the finest details. As my friend said: "I blog to reflect on myself".

Dare to speak your mind!

Reader might think that my blog is mild compared to hers, which is fiery! I generally don't have a lot of complains about life. Neither do I blog to condemn a certain person. Yes, I expressed a lot of disappointment and unhappiness about a certain someone not very long ago in this very blog, but that is only like one of out how many articles I've uploaded over the months?

My friend commented that my English is good, I think not. It's just normal, an acceptable level of English which people understand easily. I use simple sentence structure most of the time, if Reader noticed. For better English, please refer to Sue Anne's and Xiaxue's blog (just 2 examples I happen to think of! Sorry if I've missed out yours!) . I think both exhibit excellent language usage. For a fact, Sue's is definitely more polite than Xiaxue's. Haha!

At this point, Reader may think that the blogs I read everyday are so boring that I'm totally excited just at seeing one which is totally different. With due credits to my friends, some of you keep good blogs that I follow religiously. I have like 20 URLs in my Favourite which belongs to people like you.

You read mine, I'll read yours. You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours. You be nice to me, I'll be nice to you too.

That's my philosophy in life. Simple isn't it?

Rest and Xvatalie!

Rest day
Ah! One off day to slack my head off at home!

Some friends who see me regularly on MSN always seem to think I'm a very slackish person. This is not really true. You see, in the Central Band, we work hard and rest hard. Sometimes I'm just fortunate not to be involved in some activities which make me look very "eng".

Take the previous weekend for example. Right after the In Harmony concert, we went back to camp to unload everything. After that, we went for supper at Chong Pang (nasi lemak!) only to return to camp at about 2am in the morning to sleep till morning. Why? We have a National Day full dress rehearsal the very next day that will last all day at the National Stadium as all NDP rehearsals goes.

That's not the end of the story. If Reader thinks that Sunday will be a rest day, den you are wrong! Sadly, there's a dining-in at the Istana in the evening. It's some reception for senior officers in the SAF. Well, I wasn't there. I was sick from fatigue and an upset stomach.

With more dining-ins on Tuesday and Thursday and eventually the NE show on Saturday, the band was in ceremonial uniform every other day.

Xvatalie
Ok, my Xvatalie got the thumb-up from my teacher! Heng ah! I was worried that she was not going to like it. For Reader's info, Xvatalie is the new of my new baby, my oboe. Why the name you wonder? I'll get to it later.

Xva is quite a heavy girl, much heavier than any other that I've come across so far. She has a very big, projective voice. The notes produced are all so stable and even, lovely! The sound might be a bit boring but I guess that can be changed. I'm going to try out silver staples soon! I guess the only thing I don't like is the case cover that came along with it. It's too tight! Maybe I will buy a Alteri case cover when I have the money.

As for the name Xvatalie (pronouned as VAA-TA-LIE, similarly to Natalie but change the syllabus NAT to VAT with a silent X), it came along with a conversation with Winnie. We have this little game in which we come out with a letter each. I started with an 'X', she gave a 'V' and so on. Initially we got to something like "Xvayai" but I thought it sounded quite Indian so we went back to Xva. Somehow it merges very well with Natalie and so we have Xvatalie!

As Winnie said, my name Fjozn sounds weird too. Weird spelling and pronunciation. Please pronoun my name as FEE-YONG-Z with a silent N! It's not English so please don't try to pronoun it in the English way. =)

By the way, I picked X as the first letter as I wanted something exotic and furthermore the model of Xva is XL. So what do you think of this name?

Some jokes from last night's talk-cock session at MacDonald's after the SP Band practice.

There was a hunter in the forest. At the same time, there were a bird flying and a gorilla minding its own business.

The hunter took aim and shot the bird. Dead on!

So why did the gorilla have a nosebleed?

\/

Because, the gorilla was digging its nose!

Robin Hood then came riding along. He only happened to have 2 arrows on him at the same time. So he took aim again and fire off at the gorilla. The gorilla caught the arrow with its left hand. Robin Hood then took the other arrow and shoot at the gorilla again. This time it caught the arrow with its right hand. Somehow the gorilla also died. Why?

\/

The gorilla died from the nosebleed.

Alternate answer:

The gorilla started pounding its chest King Kong style, forgetting it has an arrow in each hand!

Later fellas!

NE Show

Yesterday's NDP rehearsal was really the longest rehearsal I've attended in a long time!

Technically we worked from 9 am in the morning till we booked out at1.30am at night. Man, it was really tiring. It took so long that I actually finished Deception Point by Dan Brown while waiting for the bus to come!

The rehearsal itself actually went by without any major hiccup. What happened was that the rehearsal yesterday was meant for Primary 5 students from all around Singapore. There were over 50 000 of them who attended. Buses were deployed to fetch all of them back to school. Now, this is there the problem came in. Somehow, this year the boarding of the buses were much slower as compared to previous years. I don't know if this is a first or not, but last year we were stranded for maybe an hour plus not like 5 HOURS like last night!

Well, at least it wasn't really that bad for me. The kids were really damn poor things, having to stand there for so long. Hopefully the committee can do a better job next year. I'm sure they would have gotten quite a mouthful from waiting parents at the school.

*PS. Deception Point was quite interesting. Somehow I felt that the writing structure was suspiciously similar to The Dan Vinci Code. Brown misleads you to think that the overall mastermind is someone when it's actually another person. 7.8/10.

Oh wow!

I have a fan!

This is quite amazing. Oh well, at least someone thinks this blog is very much readable. Thank you, whoever you are! It'd be nice if you could identify yourself. =)

***

Let's see, the last time I blogged was on Sunday. Pretty short posting about Formula 1. Oh well. I didn't say anything about the SAF concert, did I?

SAF Central Band In Harmony 19 - Frank Ticheli
I think it's quite a forgettable concert personally. That's just for me. Overall, the entire concert was great! In fact, it must been one of the best concert that I've played for them so far (the 4th already). I think Frank Ticheli is one of the better composer-conductor around. I would say that most composers are not cut out to be conductors. Mostly. Of course there are exceptions, like Frank. He really does know his music very well.

On my own part, I thought I did quite badly. No perfect solo. Perhaps the only one that was deemed passable by me was the small 4 notes solo in Pacific Fanfare. Now, the interesting thing is: I was told I did well for my solos! From not one, not two but many! Well, it's at least 4-5, which I still consider quite amazing considering the low rating I gave myself. Maybe I really do have too-high standards. Haha! But still, it doesn't mean I will lower it. No way!

On the bright side, my reeds proved itself to work for the whole concert (half actually, I only played for 4 pieces). My skills are starting to stablise. About time too! Finally!

Oh! I just got news from my friend that my new knife, thumbrest and PINK thread are here! Woohoo!

Bee: If you are reading this, I'm gonna say this again! I'm really really really surprised! *falls off chair*

Formula One

F1 News
Schumacher Victory!

This seems to be the headline for almost every single Grand Prix this session. 10 out of 11 GPs! His winning rate is phenomenal! It's really fun to watch him race from the back overtaking everyone until he's in the lead. True, the F1 scene is getting boring with him winning almost every race, but he's really good and he has a great car. What can the others say?

I think it was quite funny, the F1 committee changed some rules and regulations this year so that it would be harder to "dominate" but somehow, nothing's changed. One can visualize him racing away with a grin on his face: "Somebody, stoooop meeeeeeeeeee!"

Go MS go!

The day

I'm tired after this long day.

There was full band the whole day with Frank Ticheli. Well, I think he's quite a nice guy who is able to deliver. Somehow the Central Band sounds quite good under his baton. So, people who are attending the In Harmony Concert this coming Friday, expect a good concert!

I really hope my oboe doesn't cock up on me this Friday. I've just replaced a strip of cork on my key. One important thing to note: It's the very first concert that I'm playing on my own reeds. Hopefully my reeds don't cock up on me too!

My XL will be coming next week! So exciting!

Za: It seems that it will be hard to get a separate place to practice. Instruments are a problem too. Oh well, just don't back off yet. WE have a right to be there!

PS. People who are interested in attending this Friday's concert may do so by just going there. It's at Singapore Conference Hall at 1930 hrs. Although tickets are technically all reserved, bear in mind that all the concerts I've played there so far were never full house (some people just reserve and don't show up). So just drop by and say hi to me!

Mad and busy

I'm mad.

There are a thousand things I want to buy and none of them are cheap. I need some money to drop from the sky tomorrow!

The forecast for the next year or so looks really busy at the moment.

July
In Harmony 19 - Frank Ticheli

August
National Day Parade
Band Conference Concert

September
In Harmony 20
Grade 8 Practical Examinations

October
NCO Camp (if I'm not wrong)

November
In Harmony 21

December
So far nothing that I know of

January
In Harmony 22 - James Barnes
They commissioned him to compose some piece for the SAF's 40th anniversary. Let's hope it's not some crazy godly piece!

February
Audition for orchestra.

July
WASBE Conference 2005
World Music Competition somewhere in Europe.

August
Musical tour if the February audition was successful.

Long, long year ahead man!

Someone said: "I want my life to be exciting"

I think this schedule is pretty "exciting" for now. Haha!

The rehearsal with Frank Ticheli will start tomorrow. I hope he's a nice guy like Philip Sparke.

The memories of the Sparke concert are still quite fresh in my mind. It will always be one of the most memorable event in my life. Shall update again tomorrow if I'm home. Watch this space!

On a happier note

Enough with unhappy things, let's talk about the happy stuffs.

Spiderman 2
Essentially, this is a very nice show with good CG. I really like how they rendered the scenes when Spidey was "flying" through the streets of New York. The CG for Doctor Octopus was good too. Very impressive. I shall not disclose too much this time round, except maybe I thought it was good that some people discovered his identity in this movie. I'll definitely watch the 3rd installment when it's released in 2007.

Kaitze's Wedding
The day had finally come for him and I'm happy for him! The wedding dinner was quite rowdy with all the musicians around. Haha! It seems that all the wedding dinners that I've with musicians are always fun and noisy. The yam-seng is always the most choral (resolution of the dominant to the tonic), loudest (sforzando to fortissisimo) and longest (circular breathing), the couple would always end up doing or eating/drinking something funny, etc.

It was interesting to sit at a table with many oboists. Well, it wasn't that many really, only 5 and 6 if you add in Rasull, who is generally a woodwind player. The regular people were there, Frankie, Yibin, Audi and surprise! Joost Flach! For the uninformed Reader, Joost was formerly an oboist in the Singapore Symphony who is now playing for the Malaysian Philharmonic.

It was nice to chat with him throughout the dinner. He's quite a nice guy, perhaps I will go to him for a master class when I'm in Kuala Lumpur. Anyway, he just came back from the International Double Reed Society Conference in Melbourne. I've wanted to go but didn't because of the money factor. I think he tried the cocobolo XL I've initially wanted to buy there. Haha!

Lesson
The lesson with Elaine this morning was quite ok. I haven't really prepared my piece very well, but spent time chatting about the reeds I have. I saw the Rigoutat Cor Anglais she bought back from Paris. Well, it looks normal but I quite like the case. Too bad it doesn't really provide much protection. It's technically just a piece of cushion between the instrument and the outside. So once you drop it? *urgh*

Well, I shall surf for a double case now. See you guys/gals on the next post.

- Zhihui's blog

I was left speechless after reading this part of her blog, utterly dismayed at what had gone on behind our back. People who are supposed to lead by example backstabbing us? Oh man, what more can I say?

"the main reason for my blogging rite now is just to reflect, not to condemn." - Zalina's blog

For this, I'm not going to say much about Doreen Tan. I have had enough of condemning in my previous post. I believe that most of the current band members still do respect her very much and hence I shall not unleash the bitch in me. What I can say is that whatever little respect I had for her had since evaporated after reading this extract.

It's saddening, isn't it? Being outcast for no reason. Guilty without trial. Straight to the gallows.

And no, I'm just not going to stop for this. Why let them have their way when we can have our way? As Ivan puts it: "The more they don?t want to see me, the more I will show up!"

They don't have an oboe for me? Fine, I'll bring mine. I don't play on just any oboe anyway.

They don't have reeds for me? Fine, I'll use mine. I make them myself anyway.

They don't have a stand for me? Nevermind, I can bring one along.

No chair? I'll stand.

No access to the school? I'll complain to the principal and/or MOE if necessary. Don't even attempt to try me.

Alumni Practice

I went to my secondary school's alumni practice feeling like a total stranger.

First on the agenda was a "welcoming speech" by the band's current teacher-in-charge (TIC), which felt more like a lecturing/boasting session by him. He went into issues like how he brought the band to the current standard with him in charge, how we should obey the rules of the schools, how we should be going back to help out, how we shouldn't be going back just for the sake for playing.

To top it off, he ended the session by chasing out a member of the band, my friend, AN ALUMNI. Now tell me, how are we going to get this band on track with a TIC who chases out members of the band just based on the fact that he doesn't like him? The fella certainly hasn't done anything wrong. He wasn't rude to the TIC, he wasn't defiant, he didn't break any rules. No sir, nothing. I have absolutely no respect for a teacher who is biased, unreasonable and bear grudges. Who does he think he is? The king of the school? Sure, he's concerned for the well-being of the band but why chase out someone who has done nothing wrong!?

A question he put to my batch: "So why so many of you suddenly show up after so many years?"

So he HAS to tell us that we are not welcome? Fine. I had an urge to tell him in the face: "Why? You wanna know why? You are the reason. We didn't feel welcomed back then. Similarly we don't feel welcomed again with you around."

When I last visited the band more than 3 years ago, he asked the entire alumni group to fall in. Incredible. And he went to talk about the rules and discipline of the school. *roll eyes*

Most people would probably feel welcomed by their teachers when they go back to visit their alma mater. This one certainly didn't. Others would ask about their ex-students, finding out what they are doing, how their lives were after the schooling period and so on. This one didn't.

I believe that most of us from the same batch to meet old friends, to catch up with each others, to relive the old days of music-making, to meet our juniors, to re-make friends whom we had lost touch with.

This TIC treats us, mostly 20+ peoples, like kids. Sure, we want to rekindle the old feeling of being in a school band again. But with him breathing down our neck? No thanks. Surely we are sensible and mature enough to follow the general rules of the school? He didn't think so. In our point of view, he wants an alumni band of people coming from his era; IE. people after my batch.

He expects people to come down to tutor the current students and make them better players. Fine. I think the majority of us is fine with doing that if they have the time. Somehow the fact that he EXPECTS us to do it didn't go down well with us.

I don't like to say this but

HE'S A DAMN BASTARD. Period.

After so much ranting, I still think I will go back for more practices. Not on his account, but rather, on Zalina's account. She had pushed very hard to get the alumni band going and I think we shouldn't disappoint her by mass-quitting the band. Hopefully the damn bastard (oops I did it again) won't try to play bastard (double oops) with us.

I can tell him this: Some of us, myself included get paid to play and to teach. I can take time off to play in the alumni band. I can play for free, instrument and reeds (an oboe and oboe reeds are not cheap stuff!) provided; all I need is a chair and music stand. BUT! I can also choose not to tolerate your bastardlistic (you know what I mean! + triple oops) way and behaviour.

Hopefully, the next practice would be a peaceful and happy one!

Presidential Birthday

Today is our President S. R. Nathan's birthday! I didn't know he is already 80 years old! He certainly doesn't look or interact like his age. In fact I thought he was only 60 this year. Seeing him so many times at the various Istana Welcoming Ceremonies and presidential events over the last 2 years with the Central Band makes me think that he seems really nice. Here's to him:

Happy Birthday!
